Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. A Maceration Technique for A/B Extractions. 2022-01-12T08:50:49+00:00 2022-01-12T08:50:49+00:00 https://www.dev5.justholistics.com/component/easydiscuss/a-maceration-technique-for-a-b-extractions?Itemid=109 Sam Greetings Friends: I have found the following technique useful when trying to process larger batches of material, say more than a few hundred grammes or material which is particularly bulky/fresh, using less water. It applies mainly to the water-acid extraction part of an A/B extraction tek and can be used with any material which is being extracted by this process. I find that it is a particularly good method for those of us who have limited energy resources available (or alternatively, are choosing to reduce their energy consumption) to run large amounts of electricity or gas, say because they are off grid and have limited solar available or getting butane/propane requires a monumental effort and many kilometers of travel on dirt roads. It is clear by searching the forums that most of us are aware that in order to perform a good extraction it is necessary to increase the surface area and make repeated soak/extract cycles preferably with hot water/acid +/- boiling. Multiple freezing/thawing cycles if using fresh material is also useful. I would like to share this method which tries to optimise all of these components and attempts to combine them in a way which uses up less energy overall. I did not come up with this myself and would like to acknowledge the source: the wonderful workers at an Ayurvedic apothecary in Kerala where I apprenticed twenty-five years ago. As someone who is rather shy to put it mildly, i was surprised by this, but went nevertheless. So i was on my first long haul flight, alone with a chinese man sitting next to me, who could not speak english but told me through his translation app, that the "Weather is beautiful today". After a long and tiring flight i arrived in bkk and suddenly everything was different. It felt like walking in a dream. Crusing the chao phra river to find the place i would stay for the next few days. The first month or so was horrible and full of loneliness. The i decided to book a dorm, after the hostel i picked had no singles left. Best decision ever. Luckily got into a good dorm and instantly realized what solo travel is all about. Continued to have an amazing time in hanoi..made friends with a vietnamese and many other interesting people. Suddenly they were there...with me...a typical basement dweller. From zero to 100 in one flight...ok...a few more but you get what im hinting at. To my surprise, i would not find it overwhelming at all. Of course, there were challenges, uncomfortable situations...but all in all, mos things worked out. I noticed my lack of skills in many situations but i knew that it couldn't be any other way and that there was nothing i could do about it. So i didn't do anything about it. I would continue to Cambodia, learned a lot about choosing the right hostels and about group dynamics. About tuk tuk drivers too Pleased Learned about the creepiness of phnom penh, met junkies, fraudsters and good people. Fell ill in sihanoukville and drank too much. Went on to see the wonders of Angkor and was blown away. Decided spontaneously to go to lao as well ... loved vang vieng, the nature and the party... a real intoxicating blend. Went back with more contacts than i have made in years of studying and miss quite a few of them. Its cold here and i have settled into my old life...pretty much, yeah. People are much less polite, but there is inexpensive cheese. So thats the silver lining. I know i can't and won't stay here forever. I want to go back..or perhaps somewhere else? To know that there is a place where people are friendly, mostly interesting and willing to socialize makes me angry i didn't do it in my twenties or earlier...but such is life, full of mistakes but also full of hope. :D After complaining about my stale life, i decided it was time for a change and booked a flight to Bangkok. I say this after much observation and after meeting many people who were supposedly intelligent, but did not "get it". By "get it", I mean that we live in a post capitalistic world and that there is an opportunity for a much better future. Due to the perspective promoted here and through the plants, Nexians are primed for starting organizations and changing the world. I'm writing this post because I recently broke through what I thought was a high glass ceiling in my career. As such, I think I have a story to tell and some evidence that my methods - that I believe to be fairly unique - work. Keep in mind that I am not the type of person who you look at and think would be a great success. My background on paper is unremarkable. In fact I've had a lot of failures. Because of this, I have come to believe that Nexians have the capabilities to be the spark of innovation. In truth, we are far more capable than the average person. We are more likely to have the intelligence to maximize our contributions to dramatic effect. Implementing these recommendations will expedite your journey towards good fortune and success, in my experience. However, if you don't have entrepreneurship in your heart, these specific recommendations may not work for you. Get Strong - I am of the belief that weight lifting is more important than yoga when preparing to make large scale change in society. You have to be strong to carry the responsibility on your shoulders. You want to be changing lives and creating jobs. If you are physically strong you will be better able to adapt to the occasional long hours and stress that comes with starting an organization. - If you are strong - mentally and physically - you will get up faster from downfalls. - You will have more confidence to influence people. Feel free to pick up and drop hobbies on a whim. - Understand how the world works - Economics was one of the most useful courses I've ever taken. Learn the possibilities for the future by following technology, business and science. These are vastly more important than following politics, in my opinion. Take Responsibility - Non Profit Board work - this looks great on your resume. Seriously, out of all my advice this is possibly the most likely to have tangible, measurable benefits. It also gives you leadership experience and the ability to think strategically. The lessons you learn can be transferred to your own organization. There are websites to search for non profit boards in your area. If you are looking for something uplifting, arts and music organizations are often run by non profit boards. You are likely to be elected to leadership positions if you are good. - Take care of a living animal - Even if it is a fish, it is a good use of your time. Gets your thoughts in the right place. - Caring for family/friends - If you are willing to take on others' karma, by taking responsibility for them long-term, it will give you more momentum. For example, wanting to provide for a family member or be a caregiver will make you a better person. Listen to the Plants - Small, regular doses - In terms of getting information from plants, big trips might not always be necessary. After doing a number of big trips, it's possible to form a relationship with the plant. Then you can receive information in your daily waking life. This is made possible with a clean diet, no alcohol and regular small doses. - Go all in - This might be where there is a divergence in belief systems. I pretty much take what the plants tell me at face value and run with it. Sometimes into a wall, but this is how I've been playing the game. If you are slow and have been taking breaks, speed up. Not every season of life is for the same thing. If you have been giving 100% year after year without results, stop. Knowing the purpose of the season you are in is everything. It is at the point where there is serious and tangible evidence that these methods work. New York Times Leaks MAPS Phase 3 MDMA Results 2022-01-12T08:22:49+00:00 2022-01-12T08:22:49+00:00 https://www.dev5.justholistics.com/component/easydiscuss/new-york-times-leaks-maps-phase-3-mdma-results?Itemid=109 Holistics A Psychedelic Drug Passes a Big Test for PTSD Treatment A new study shows that MDMA, known as Ecstasy or Molly, can bring relief when paired with talk therapy to those with severe post-traumatic stress disorder. By Rachel Nuwer May 3, 2021 In an important step toward medical approval, MDMA, the illegal drug popularly known as Ecstasy or Molly, was shown to bring relief to those suffering from severe post-traumatic stress disorder when paired with talk therapy. Of the 90 people who took part in the new study, which is expected to be published later this month in Nature Medicine, those who received MDMA during therapy experienced a significantly greater reduction in the severity of their symptoms compared with those who received therapy and an inactive placebo. Two months after treatment, 67 percent of participants in the MDMA group no longer qualified for a diagnosis of PTSD, compared with 32 percent in the placebo group. MDMA produced no serious adverse side effects. Some participants temporarily experienced mild symptoms like nausea and loss of appetite. “This is about as excited as I can get about a clinical trial,” said Gul Dolen, a neuroscientist at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, who was not involved in the research. “There is nothing like this in clinical trial results for a neuropsychiatric disease.” Before MDMA-assisted therapy can be approved for therapeutic use, the Food and Drug Administration needs a second positive Phase 3 trial, which is currently underway with 100 participants. Approval could come as early as 2023. Mental health experts say that this research — the first Phase 3 trial conducted on psychedelic-assisted therapy — could pave the way for further studies on MDMA’s potential to help address other difficult-to-treat mental health conditions, including substance abuse, obsessive compulsive disorder, phobias, eating disorders, depression, end-of-life anxiety and social anxiety in autistic adults. And, mental health researchers say, these studies could also encourage additional research on other banned psychedelics, including psilocybin, LSD and mescaline. “This is a wonderful, fruitful time for discovery, because people are suddenly willing to consider these substances as therapeutics again, which hasn’t happened in 50 years,” said Jennifer Mitchell, a neuroscientist at the University of California, San Francisco, and lead author of the new study. But some mental health experts urged restraint. Allen James Frances, a professor emeritus and the former chair of psychiatry at Duke University, who was not involved in the new study, warned that new treatments “are never as wonderful as first they seem.” “All new treatments in medicine have always had a temporary halo effect by virtue of being new and by promising more than they can possibly deliver,” Dr. Frances said. Unlike traditional pharmaceuticals, MDMA does not act as a band-aid that tries to blunt symptoms of PTSD. Instead, in people with PTSD, MDMA combined with therapy seems to allow the brain to process painful memories and heal itself, Dr. Mitchell said. Critically, MDMA taken in isolation, without therapy, does not automatically produce a beneficial effect. “It’s not the drug — it’s the therapy enhanced by the drug,” said Rick Doblin, senior author of the study and director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, a nonprofit research group that sponsored and financed the clinical trials. For this process to work, a person must be primed to engage with their trauma. Participants first undertook preparatory sessions with two trained therapists. Then in three sessions of eight-hours each, spaced a month apart, they received either an inactive placebo or MDMA. Neither the participants nor the therapists knew which. While most participants correctly guessed whether they received a placebo or MDMA, this did not undermine the study’s results or its methodology, which was agreed to in advance by the F.D.A. Scott Ostrom, who participated in the study, had suffered from PTSD since returning home from his second deployment in Iraq in 2007. For more than a decade, he experienced debilitating nightmares. “Bullets would dribble out of the end of my gun, or I’d get separated from my team and be lost in a town where insurgents were watching me,” he said. Mr. Ostrom’s days were punctuated by panic attacks, and he dropped out of college. He pushed friends and family away, and got into an unhealthy romantic relationship. He was charged with assault and attempted suicide. Therapy and medication did not help. But after participating in the trial, he no longer has nightmares. “Literally, I’m a different person,” he said. During his first of three sessions in early 2019, lying on a couch with eye shades, and in a lucid dreamlike state, Mr. Ostrom encountered a spinning, oily black ball. Like an onion, the ball had many layers, each one a memory. At the center, Mr. Ostrom relived the moment in Iraq, he said, that “I became the person I needed to be to survive that combat deployment.” Over the next two sessions, Mr. Ostrom engaged with “the bully,” as he calls his PTSD alter ego, and asked permission for Scott to return. Mr. Ostrom, 36, now works steadily as an HVAC specialist and owns a home near Boulder, Colo., which he shares with his girlfriend, Jamie Ehrenkranz, and his service dog, an English lab named Tim. “The reason I like calling this medicine is it stimulated my own consciousness’s ability for self-healing,” Mr. Ostrom said. “You understand why it’s OK to experience unconditional love for yourself.” Merck pharmacists invented MDMA, which is short for 3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine, in 1912. But the compound was largely forgotten until 1976, when Alexander Shulgin, a well-known psychedelic chemist, synthesized MDMA and tried it himself. Realizing that his discovery could have therapeutic value, Dr. Shulgin shared MDMA in 1977 with Leo Zeff, a psychotherapist who introduced it to other mental health professionals. Over the next eight years, hundreds of therapists and others administered an estimated half a million doses of MDMA. Some reported that, in just a few sessions with the medication, patients achieved an amount of progress that normally took years. In the early 1980s, however, MDMA escaped from the clinic to the dance floor, where it became known as Ecstasy. In 1985, the Drug Enforcement Administration criminalized MDMA as a Schedule I substance, defined as having “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.” Some mental health professionals continued to administer MDMA-assisted therapy underground, but most stopped. The numbers of scientists who pursued studies with MDMA also dwindled. But a few individuals continued to push strongly on behalf of MDMA research, including Dr. Doblin, who founded his association in 1986 to focus on developing MDMA and other psychedelics into medications approved by the F.D.A. It took nearly two decades to overcome alarmist claims about Ecstasy’s dangers, including that it ate holes in users’ brains, to finally gain approval to begin studies. Research in animals and humans confirms that MDMA produces no neurotoxic effects at the doses administered in clinical trials. Ecstasy or Molly, on the other hand, can be adulterated with other potentially dangerous substances, and users may take far higher doses than are safe. In 2011, MDMA accounted for 1.8 percent of all U.S. drug-related emergency department visits, according to a database maintained until that year by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. In Europe, MDMA was responsible for 8 percent of drug-related emergency visits to 16 major hospitals in 10 countries from 2013 to 2014. Scientists still do not fully understand the source of MDMA’s therapeutic effects. The substance binds to proteins that regulate serotonin, a neurotransmitter that can, among other things, lift mood. Antidepressant medications like Prozac bind to these same proteins and block their reabsorption of serotonin, but MDMA takes this process further, causing the proteins to pump serotonin into synapses, strengthening their chemical signal. MDMA also elevates levels of oxytocin, dopamine and other chemical messengers, producing feelings of empathy, trust and compassion. But its primary therapeutic effect may come from its seeming ability to reopen what neuroscientists refer to as a “critical period,” the window during childhood when the brain has the superior ability to make new memories and store them. Evidence from a mouse study published in Nature in 2019 indicates that MDMA may return the adult brain to this earlier state of malleability. An estimated 7 percent of the U.S. population will experience PTSD at some point in their life, and as many as 13 percent of combat veterans have the condition. In 2018, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs spent $17 billion on disability payments for over one million veterans with PTSD. For the approximately half to one-third of people who do not find relief through treatment, PTSD can become chronic, lasting years or even a lifetime. The 90 participants who took part in the Phase 3 trial included combat veterans, first responders and victims of sexual assault, mass shootings, domestic violence or childhood trauma. All had severe PTSD and had been diagnosed, on average, for more than 14 years. Many had a history of alcohol and substance use disorder, and 90 percent had considered suicide. The trial included data collected by 80 therapists at 15 sites in the United States, Canada and Israel. Albert Garcia-Romeu, a psychopharmacology researcher at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, who was not involved in the study, said that additional research is needed to explore the therapy’s efficacy for people of diverse races and ethnicities, because three-quarters of the trial participants were white. This limitation also underscores, he said, “the importance of accessibility of these types of treatments to people of color and folks with lower socioeconomic status, who already suffer from health disparities and high rates of trauma.” But, overall, Dr. Garcia-Romeu said, the findings “make a clear case for medical approval,” something that “represents a sea change that could revolutionize health care.” Nathan McGee, 43, is another example of a patient who benefited from the drug. Since he was a teenager, he has been in and out of therapy and on and off medications for depression and anxiety. “I was always angry, without cause,” he said. In 2019, Mr. McGee was diagnosed with PTSD stemming from an event that happened when he was 4 years old. As a trial participant, he first thought that he had received the placebo. But about an hour into his initial session at a study site in Boulder, Colo., a calm awareness settled over him and he felt himself moving inward. Under the influence of MDMA, and guided by his therapists, Mr. McGee was able to revisit his traumatic memory through the eyes of his 4-year-old self, unclouded by stigmas, adult interpretations or heavy emotion. “This allowed me to accept myself and recognize who I am,” he said. Since taking part in the trial in early 2020, he is less easily angered and more able to enjoy the moment. “I’m continually discovering new things and improving,” Mr. McGee said. “It’s made me really understand what the feeling of joy is.” A Psychedelic Drug Passes a Big Test for PTSD Treatment A new study shows that MDMA, known as Ecstasy or Molly, can bring relief when paired with talk therapy to those with severe post-traumatic stress disorder. We want to emphasize the fact that we STRONGLY discourage such actions, as they put at risk not only the one driving but others who have nothing to do with your decisions! We do NOT want people bragging about how they drove after taking this or that substance, and doing so will result in warning and/or suspension of the account. Please think before posting/chatting, remember that what we talk about is not just empty words but it also impacts other people, it might give new members wrong ideas, it might offend those who might have lost loved ones with such actions, and it gives power to those that want to protect us from ourselves and keep our medicines criminalized. Secondly, we have also noticed on both chat and on the forum people recklessly glorifying drug use. This forum is not about competing who can take more drugs, get the most high, or take the biggest combinations!!! We sincerely hope people are more mature than that, and realize that we want people to use substances respectfully, carefully and in a humble manner. Those that insist in bragging about drug use and using it as pure ego boosting can also get their accounts suspended. While I try to regularly practice and exude gratitude, it's natural for me to reflect more so about what I'm thankful for. I may be struggling in life, but I fortunately have a tremendous amount to be grateful for. I am overwhelmingly thankful and grateful to all of YOU (and especially Trav for the brilliant work in creating this space and continuing to diligently foster it in an accepting, structured, and incisive way). I have made many beautiful connections that have helped me grow, given me a sense of comradere, and made me feel in many ways that I've found my main community (it doesn't even matter to me anymore the need for anonymity: these are still heartfelt connections). This place has done too much good for me that I can describe (probably also because I'm under the weather presently). Each one of us has contributed to these feelings.
